Thriller Films

Thriller films are meant to excite the audience through tension and suspense. The higher the anticipation of the audience, the more enjoyment they should feel upon reaching a conclusion.
The aim of a thriller film is to provide a thrilling entertainment for the viewer and maintain a tense plot that builds suspense right up until the climax which should have the viewer on the edge of their seats by that point. The climax of the film is usually the most intense section as the character or characters are put in a certain situation that is very tense or exciting. The thriller theme is usually quite dark and abstract and involves deadly plots or situations which are used to thrill the audience.

Thriller films are very similiar to horror films in the way that suspense is used very cleverly to create tension and anxiety. The main difference between a horror and a thriller film though is that the horror films are generally used to induce fear and create a terrifying atmosphere involving more gory scenes and horrific sights, whereas the thiller films excite because of the suspense and intense storylines.

There are many subgenres of thriller films including; Psychological, Action, Mystery, Political and Paranoid thrillers. The Thriller genre tends to overlap on a large scale with the action and horror genres as they can be used together to create suspense as well as an exciting/scary storyline.

For my summary of a thriller film I have chosen the film 'Taking of Pelham 123' seeing as I have seen the film and I thought it created supsense very well and was quite exciting with a great storyline.

The main advertisement for this film (as shown above) is a very interesting one. It has a black background which gives the impression of darkness which is a key instrument that is used in the movie as it the film is mainly set in the underground train tunnels. The title stands out very well against the dark background as the colour schemes work well together with the black on white. The font and effects that are induced onto the title are very bold and eye-catching. The blurred white effect portrays the movement of trains and because the film is based on the hijacking of a train, the title references the blurred movement of a train passing as it is hard to picture due to the speed that it would be travelling at.

At each side of this advertisement is a person. On the left, Denzel Washington who is one of the main characters in the film and on the right is John Travolta, another actor with a huge reputation. The lighting that shows the two characters is different. The image of Denzel Washington has a sepia-tint to it whereas John Travolta has a lighter blue kind of colour added to his image.

  1. You have a good understanding of how thrillers try to engage with their audience - well done.

Try not to compliment the genre - focus on carrying out an analysis. Some of these paragraphs are irrelevant to show your understanding of thrillers.

Where is the rest of your work?
